    Rātā Foundation undertook an Environmental Scan as part of the Foundation’s policy development work. The work was done by Karen Denyer of Papawera. Our objective is to take learning's from the scan to develop a more strategic approach to investing in the Environmental Sector. Our Board of Trustees have signed off on a new Environmental Policy for Rātā Foundation and over the next few weeks we will be adding our priorities for this area onto the funding section of our website.

    Rata Foundation wraps up 2016 with $6 million of community grants to Canterbury

    Rātā Foundation has wrapped up its funding for 2016 with over $6 million in grant approvals for Canterbury community groups, with $1.975 million earmarked for building projects. Louise Edwards, Chief Executive of Rātā Foundation says the $2 million for building projects reflects the strong desire by Trustees to continue ongoing support of the Canterbury rebuild post-earthquake, as well as promote social cohesion within communities. The remaining $4 million has been spread across the Foundation’s small and large grants programmes. “The majority of these projects have been locally-led, with a strong focus on providing facilities for community-centered activities and events.”

    Rata Foundation announces $1.1million Earthquake Recovery Fund

    Rātā Foundation today announced a $1.1 million Earthquake Recovery Fund to provide support to the Hurunui, Kaikoura and Marlborough districts following the devastating 7.8 earthquake. Chair of the Foundation, Roger Bridge says the focus of the Fund will be on supporting the recovery of affected communities. “We know from experience the recovery period after a disaster of this magnitude can be long and difficult. It is essential for the long-term welfare of people in these regions that they get as much financial support as possible to rebuild lives and infrastructure,” says Roger Bridge.

    Rata Foundation approved $20.2 million in grants across its four funding regions of Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and the Chatham Island's in the 2015/2016 financial year. However, it received $45 million in requests over this period. Over the past year the Foundation had stream-lined its application process and taken a more strategic approach to grants.

    Our New Kaumatua - Peter Mason

    “We are pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Mason as Rātā Foundation’s Kautmatua,” says Roger Bridge, Chair of Rātā Foundation. “The Kaumatua role is new for our organisation and will tautoko (support) kaitiaki (trustees) and kaimahi (staff) in our endeavours to engage effectively with Māori communities with our takiwā (region) of Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and the Chatham Islands.” “This dedicated role ensures our commitment to Te Ao Māori. Peter will provide cultural leadership, support and advice to the Foundation especially in nurturing relationships with Iwi around our takiwā,” he says.

    In its first round of funding in 2016 under its new Funding Framework Rātā Foundation (formerly The Canterbury Community Trust) has announced funding of $243,250 to Marlborough organisations working in the community. This is compared to funding requests of over $350,360. Chief Executive Louise Edwards says there had been a high demand under this round’s funding budget, particularly under the Foundation’s new Large Grant programme. “Having moved from a closing date driven form of funding to a new framework we knew demand for funding would be high, especially under the present community conditions.”

This is compared against funding requests of over $965,049.     Trust supports the Arts in Canterbury

    The Canterbury Community Trust had to make some tough decisions in this year’s arts and heritage sector funding. With a budget of $1.2 million to work with and requests for over $4.2 million it was never going to be an easy task – that equates to $1 granted for every $3.50 requested.

    Families in eastern suburbs will be able to swim close to home when Linwood Ave School opens its pools to the public on 6 December. Rawhiti Community Sport Inc, which opens the North New Brighton School pool after school hours and during summer holidays, will also run the Linwood pools.

    The Canterbury Community Trust is pleased to announce it has approved donations to the Canterbury education sector of over $1.17million. Over a third of the 115 approved applications were from primary and secondary schools requesting Information and Communications Technology (ICT) support.
